In the days of the war between the Fringe and Inner City, Daniel served on a superhero team alongside Rorschach, John, and Adrian. Toward the end of the war, the team had drifted apart, with each member moving on to their own methods. Dan tried to retire, but had trouble adjusting to civilian life. Rorschach dragged him back in while he was tracking down a criminal orginization. The two traced the trail all the way to Adrian, and we're shocked he'd have such connections. They followed him to his secret base, and confronted him about his plan. They were too late to stop him. 

Now, years after Adrian's plan brought a halt to the war, Dan is still picking up the pieces and once again trying to readjust to "normal"life.
