Today we'd like to do some mini-announcements for a few things- talking about some behind-the-scenes stuff while the species' hiatus is still ongoing, regarding our current discussions for the week, as we'd like to keep the community in the loop. 

We're looking to do these sort of announcements potentially bi-weekly, just to go over what we've been currently working on during that time from the last announcement.
We will be updating this post specifically and bumping it per each update, along with cross-posting to our discord server announcements.

Our main focus over the past week was going over the Sand Bank, and adjusting prices drastically for redeeming art pieces. We're really looking into raising prices for things like animation, sculptures, and 3D models especially- as these are incredibly time consuming projects and we'd like to give more of a reward for people who create and work in these mediums who'd like to turn their work in for species currency. We're looking into raising prices and reward output overall, but these areas specifically needed the overhaul. 

We're also going to be adjusting categories and splitting things up in a similar vein to how Art Fight operates with it's point system. This is to make things more streamlined and easier to judge as a whole.

We hope the new system, once rolled out, is a lot more rewarding and engaging for everybody in the community.

We'd also like to announce Ara's retirement from the staff team officially, with his permission, and without going into too much detail, he's chosen to step down from staff due to ongoing health issues. We give him our love and well wishes for the future, and appreciate the time and work he has spent while on the staff team. 💕 

We'd also like to bump our staff applications, as they end in one week's time. You can find more information in our February Newsletter, as well as links to both applications.

This is a reminder that you must be 18 years of age or older to apply to staff, and this is an unpaid, voluntary position- but will have paid opportunities.

Hello everyone, as we head into February we have a few things to go over.

hiatus start

Our species hiatus is beginning, our current timeframe for this hiatus is planned until end of April.
However, if things continue to go smoothly, this time could be shortened and end sooner than planned- but I cannot make any solid promises on that front. We are going to be doing our best to make this go as well as possible!

During this hiatus, the following will be effectively put "on pause"

- Prompt Submissions
- Tide Pool Submissions (prompt only- surrenders are okay!)
-MYO / SB  Submissions
- Design Updates
- Site Events (such as Easter)

Any art created by users over the hiatus duration will be counted after the hiatus has ended!
Please don't worry about your art not being submissable for sanddollars, we will still count them after the hiatus ends.


During the hiatus, we as staff are going to be focusing on: 

- Updating site assets (prior announcement)
- Fixing masterlist entries (prior announcement 1 | 2 | 3)
- Updating the site to Lorekeeper v3 (Fundraiser)
- Adding new site features
- Re-Working the Sand Bank payouts
- Continue cleaning up and updating any old, outdated information on the site and discord server.

Staff applications

As mentioned in our last newsletter, staff applications are now open! 
These will be open until the end of day February 21st, (11:59pm EST) and we will have new staff members contacted by the end of the month.

All characters featured on the Moderator Application are all staff-owned and currently hidden from the masterlist. Just do the best you can!

Please note: Being a staff member is entirely a voluntary position, you will not be paid for this job using real-world currency.
However, staff members will be "paid" monthly with currency specifically to staff, and this is calculated entirely based around activity.
You will also recieve some paid opportunities as a member of staff (adopts, breedings, sea breeze salon, ect...) 

With this in mind, you will not be expected to be overly active, we understand everyone has other obligations and priorties outside of the community and we respect that entirely. You will never be let go from the team for minimal activity in a month, unless there's prolonged periods of time with zero activity at all without prior communication to the rest of the team.

Staff Applications are only open to folks who are 18 years of age or older, DO NOT submit an application if you are under 18.

This includes submitting applications "just for fun," only apply if you are of age, and are serious about applying.

voiding / unvoiding rule updates

We have made a few changes to our voiding and unvoiding process going forwards, please read everything over carefully!

While we still want users to be able to void/unvoid their dogs freely, this can be a lot of unnecessary work for staff in the case of an owner repeatedly voiding and unvoiding the same characters in a small timeframe. Voiding is still meant to be a last resort, as it’s the complete removal of your character from the species. We encourage users not to void impulsively and to think it over first, as voided characters cannot be used or advertised in our server or on site.

With this in mind, we are implementing a cooldown of 6 months when it comes to the same owner voiding and unvoiding a character- meaning that if you are the one to void a waterdog, you must wait 6 months in order to unvoid them again.
If any users are caught evading this rule by trading characters to someone else to unvoid, and then having them be traded back, they will be given a strike. Likewise, after a character is unvoided, six months must pass from the date of the void before the same owner can re-void them.

In addition to this time limit, we are also placing a limit on the number of characters that can be un-voided at a time, with a maximum of 5 characters at once. After this maximum is reached, users must wait 3 months before they can un-void any more characters that they themselves, have voided.

A reminder that this un-voiding limit WILL NOT affect those who obtain already voided characters. This is to curb instances of mass voiding and un-voiding by the same owner. You will still be allowed to mass void characters, although it is strongly discouraged.

We are implementing this change to encourage users to weigh the pros and cons of voiding, and to prevent an unnecessary workload on staff. We thank you for your understanding and continued support!

User customs rule update

In years past, we have never offically allowed community members to advertise custom designs (for money) in the discord server / community spaces.
However, we'd like to make an amendment to that ruling...

Members can now advertise customs / design concepts- whether for real-world curreny, items, trades, ect.. in the server and other similar spaces. However it must be made 100% clear that these designs are non-official, and users would still need to obtain and provide all the proper items in order to make the design official. 
The designs can also be appraised for how much they were bought for when submitting them to the masterlist (with proof of purchase amount.) 

We know we've had a lot of questions in the past regarding our stance on this topic, and we're happy to say we will be allowing users to take waterdog design concepts/customs for real-world currency with the above rules in mind.
Any advertisments that do not state the designs are still non-official / will need the correct items provided, will be asked to have their wording changed, or post will be removed.

Sea Breeze Salon update

We have a new update for the Sea Breeze Salon, where staff members can now provide users with a Self-Breed design. Similarly to staff breeding batches, but will be more along the lines of user created Self-Breeds.
This update is for members who might want a breeding design from a staff member, but don't want to have multiple designs to choose from / want to be able to pick their own artist.
This also works for the members on staff who might be interested in creating breeding batches, but find the idea of making multiple designs from one set of parents too daunting or overwhemling.

• User must provide a Self-Breeding Slot in order to purchase.
• Follows the same rules as normal SB's, cannot pass down mythical traits.
• Can get a cat or big cat self-breeding with a small fee added on, dogs are still the default otherwise like a normal SB slot.
• Cannot get a mix breeding unless the user has the proper item for it, like SB's and Breeding Batches work normally.
• User can provide a species potion to change the species of the child from the parents.
• Parents must have useable SB slots available to be used, unless a SB Restoration Slot ticket is provided.
• Comes with a free "dice roll" which adds on one extra trait the parents do not have (trait has the chance to be either rare or legendary rarity.) Users can opt out of this if no extra traits are desired.
• Can add on an additional dice roll for $5 extra, up to two rolls for a total of 3 extra traits.
• Base price is $40

Make sure you talk with your desired artist beforehand / see if this is a feature they offer and have open on the Sea Breeze Salon pages.

THIS MONTH ONLY

We will be doing a special breeding for the month of February, in honor of Valentine's!  You can choose between a
Mix Species Breeding (no voucher needed)
OR
a 3-Parent Breeding.

However, you cannot do both (unless you have the mix species voucher item already.)
Or if you'd prefer just your standard, two parent, same species breeding- that is okay too! You are not required to chose either of the above options.

Breeding batches will be 3-5 designs per batch. Amount of resulting pups/kittens is left up to the artist’s discretion.

You can purchase a Breeding Charm for your batch upon payment:

Chance to get a different color palette than that of the parents

1 in 4 chance to get an additional legendary trait.

Breeding kids have a price of $45 each (any species!)
Price is per puppy/kitten, with a max claim of two.

In the case of parents with the Shapeshifting trait, the resulting kids can be a different species than the parent's shapeshifter form- however, they will only be similar type of species.
As such, if the parent's form is a kind of bird, then the kids can end up a different species of bird as their shapeshifter form.
BUT if a breeding charm is used, the kids can be any species for a shapeshifter's form. Species types are up to artist's descrition. 
If you would prefer any children to match the parent's shapeshifter's species, you can mention that in the "Do Not" section of the breeding form.

Hello everyone, 2024 was a rough year for a lot of folks (us included) and we know even just as far as the species goes, 2024 was just as rough. Heading into 2025, we have a lot of big plans and updates that we'd like to do over the course of this year. 

I hope 2025 treats everyone well, and here's to the new year! Thank you as always for sticking with us.

Staff Updates

First things first off the bat, we have several members on staff who are going into retirement soon (after some tasks are finished up,) or have already gone into retirement. We wish everyone well, and hope to continue to see them around the community. Thank you everyone for all your hard work for your time with us!

Following this, we are looking to open staff applications next month in Feburary.

I know it's always a topic people ask about, especially if there's a  lot of staff changes ongoing at the time. We are looking to restructure staff a bit as a whole (like assigning specfic tasks and being split into groups) to make the job a bit more streamlined for everyone involved, which will help to benefit the community by having more dedicated focus groups. 

Birthday Gifts

User's now get a special birthday box gifted to them on the first of their birthday month, due to the Lorekeeper birthday rewards extension by CH3RVB and Moif! 

 This extension  also allows users to set their birthday display to be visible to members only, or only display the month. Birthday gifts are an automatic feature and will be granted to ALL accounts that have their birthday set to some level of visbility (public or sitewise.)

Due to this, if you have your account's birthday settings private you will not get the gift. They have to be visible to some degree!

Anyone born in January who did not have their birthday visible and missed the gift, may send in a report or a message a staff member on discord to get their gift- due to the suddenness of this update, however, in the future we will not grant gifts to any users who miss it!



Birthday Boxes are set and will include a prize of 500 sanddollars, a rare treat, as well as a birthday cupcake collectable item for the current year.

Archie's emporium updates

Archie's shop is finally getting his long-awaited return and overhaul!

He will now be running a shop that takes starfish and sanddollars as currency, and he'll still continue to sell runestones as he did so previously- along with a plethora of new merchandise and items!  He has also gained a new and updated banner for his shop.
These items prices have been set to reflect the current state of our Starfish and Sand Dollar economy and are subject to be changed in the future as it evens out.

Archie's will have a rotating stock of items, and will restock at the first every month! 
Items are a monthly limit per user, and not first-come-first-serve.

Multiplier Statue

A small statue that can fit in the palm of your paw!
It is imbued with the power to grant your character any one of the following traits.

• Multiple Heads
• Multiple Eyes
• Multiple Ears
• Multiple Legs

Only one trait can be used from the list above. 

Sand Sculpting Kit

"Hey look, a kit for making sand sculptures! I wonder what we could do with this..."

Gives your character the Shaped Sand trait!
Shaped Sand comes in several different styles, refer to it's trait description to see everything currently available. 

The sand sculpting kit will only provide one kind of shaped sand to add to your character.
Any addtional kinds of shaped sand will need another kit, or legendary treat.

Self-Breed Restoration Slot

This ticket grants the ability to add one additional self-breed slot to a character of your choice!
You can attach this item when submitting a self-breed design for approval, just make sure to mention which parent the item is being used for. 

Scratch Tickets

Purchase at your own discretion, items will not be re-rolled or refunded after purchase.
Make sure you are okay and comfortable with the fact that you might end up with an item you won't like and/or use!
Scratch tickets are purchased with fake on-site currency and are entirely just for fun.

Rare ticket will give you a random rare trait
Legendary ticket will give you a random legendary trait
Mythical ticket will give you anything from a random legendary trait, species potion, or a mythical trait.

Tide Pool updates

Following the latest discussions around the tide pool, and staff's own discussions on it, we've decided on some changes to the shop going forward.

Of course, if things don't work we can always make more changes later! Don't ever consider anything here 100% permanent, we want to try different things and solutions to try and make the community experience better, and if something we do doesn't work it can always be changed in the future.

The free prompt submission limit will be lowered from 3 per month, to 2. 
Starfish output rates have been raised accordingly for this!

We will be opening up another prompt for the tide pool alongside this change, for people who want to be able to use their own items and design just for the fun of it. This was something that was widely requested when the tide pool first opened up by members of the community, and we want to make it happen.

The first submission will reward starfish per month, but each submission afterwards will not. This prompt has a limit of 3 submissions per month.

Prompt limits are set to 2 a month per user, and will reward you with 35 starfish each.

Species hiatus

We wanted to announce that starting next month, there will be a planned species hiatus from Feburary - April.
We wanted to give you guys a month's notice heads up in advance, to help plan everything out accordingly.

During this time we will be focusing on hiring and training new staff members, continuing our work on the masterlist updates, art and site asset updates, and giving more time to focus on coding and overall site updates and improvements.
Ideally, we would like to upgrade our site's lorekeeper version to v3, as well as looking into several site extensions and QOL updates.

During this hiatus, we will be closing down several aspects of the website, which include
- MYO Submissions
- Tide Pool Submissions
- Prompt Submissions
- Site Events (such as Easter)

Design Updates will still be allowed over this timeframe!

The hiatus could possibly be shorter than planned if everything continues to go smoothly and we end up getting done what we have planned beforehand, but for now the deadline we're looking at is April.

We understand this is rather upsetting news, and is quite a bit of a break from a lot of aspects to the species, but ultimately things are a bit messy and disorganized, and we want to take more time to be able to focus strictly on taking care of everything that we need to. We aim to bring a better experience to the community and this is going to be our first step into doing so.

Any artwork created over the duration of the hiatus is welcome to be submitted to the sand bank after the hiatus is up! 
re-working the sand bank is one of our priorites over the hiatus, and to create a higher reward output for submitted artwork.

*NEW* Site themes have been updated

The waterdog month 2023, valentines, halloween, and winter themes have been given a new look with the new year! 

While we'd like them to be perfect it's likely a few values were missed accross the four themes so a thread in the discord server has been created to share screenshots so anything can be fixed asap.

WATERDOG WINTER ADVENT 2024

Winter is almost here and with that comes the annual Waterdog Winter Advent Calendar!!

This event starts the 1st of December and runs until the end of the month, Decemeber 31st.  

Everyday has a different theme which will have a design drawn by either a staff or guest artist to be delievered to whoever claims that theme on that day of the month!

UPDATE:

All incorrect trophies + logs should be removed now! We'll manually grant the correct 2024 trophy once the day is over so we can see the total number of people who claimed all 24 days and grant the trophies all at once and (hopefully) not miss anyone then if we grant it through-out the day!

For people who claim all 24 days, you will get a special bonus prize so make sure to check in everyday !!

These are designed by both staff and guest artists and will be revealed day by day in the newsletter linked so keep an eye out for all the wonderful designs revealed!

Tide Pool announcement

Just as a reminder from our last newspost, tide pool prompt submissions will be effectively closed for the month of December.

We will still be allowing characters to be surrendered, however. Prompt submissions will re-open on January 1st!

We have a couple announcements to go over with you guys today, specifically Secret Santa as well as we will be closing down the tide pool shop for the month of December. While we know this isn't desirable to hear so soon to the end of the month, regarding the tide pool, but we will be closing it down just a few reasons

Hello everyone, some more lil tidepool quality of life updates for you!

We have coded in:

- A check to prevent co-owned designs from being surrendered, so long as they're connected via the site co-own feature.
- A check to make sure users can't purchase their own surrenders, or tidepool designs created via the prompt. (You can still purchase designs you made/previously owned, as long as they were not submitted to the shop by you.)
- A counter to make sure surrendered designs have been owned for at least 30 days before surrendering. Surrenders will now automatically send an error message if this criteria has not been met.

We hope this makes your tidepool-ing experiences easier, and feel free to reach out if there's any issues with the code!

Hey everyone!
We know it's late, but we have a very important announcement to make regarding the tide pool and some updates for it.
Recently, I had commissioned a custom code for the shop, placing some limits onto it. This includes

- A monthly purchase limit per user. Users can purchase 3 characters each month from The Tide Pool. This number should reset on the 1st of each month.
- Custom cooldown for the shop, characters adopted will now have a 30 day cooldown placed on them. This will prevent them from being sold or traded to other users.
(Users can still purchase a design as a gift for somebody else, and just submit a report or a ticket to have them transferred by a mod. This will still use one of your purchase slots for the month, however, for the user who purchased it!)
- You will not be able to surrender designs that you have owned for under 30 days.

We hope these changes will encourage everyone to think if they truly want a design before purchasing, and allow for more people to be able to use and interact with the shop.
We understand this might be upsetting for some, but ultimately this feels like a step in the right direction upon fixing a lot of the current issues within the shop.
